Varan remake poster

Description

My fan poster for a possible reboot of Varan. We all know Legendary Pictures is making a Godzilla reboot, which is to be released next year. So I thought to myself, "they need to make a Varan film as well." In my opinion, and I sure most would agree, that Varan is a very underrated monster, barley used at all. He originally had his own film and was to appear in two other films. One got scrapped and the other he was replaced with Mothra. So he really needs another film to put him in the spot light, and it seems like Gareth would be the guy to do it, from what we've seen already of his Godzilla. But I don't think his first film, where he was the only monster, would appeal to today's audience, so a straight up remake is not going to work, as much as I'd like to think so. Here's my take on it:
The plot: A radiation and pollution problem has strongly affected the swamp of Louisiana. The large business man of the town, Ben Morrison (Ron Perlman), becomes more and more aware of it. So he hires a British scientist couple, James and Marie Myers (Tom Hiddeleston and Kate Beckinsale), to try to investigate what the cause of it is. On the first day of the investigation on the sight, which is the swamp, they collect samples of it, but meet up with the local fisherman Ray Kingston (Wesley Snipes), who claims that the Honey Island Swamp monster is to blame for this, but Ben tells the couple to ignore the claim, stating that this is a natural occurrence in the swamp. After taking the samples needed, they return home to study it. There, after receiving a call from an old friend, Brianna Smith (Sarah Michelle Gellar), they determine that a mutant type of fungus is the cause of the problem. They report their findings to Ben, and tell him the only why to cure it is to find a type of plant, which is native to Siberia. Ben then contacts an old explorer friend of his, Michael Walker (Hugh Jackman). It takes some convincing, but Michael decides to travel to Siberia to get the plant with two of his fellow explores Ellie Wilson (Monica Keena) and Eugene Wood (Ryan Kwanten). At the swamp, meanwhile, the Honey Island Swamp monster catches a wild hog and eats it, not knowing it drank from a radiated area of the lake. The creature, at first, seems to be unaffected by its feast, but this will change. In Siberia, the trio encounter a tribe of natives near the Kitakami River, insist that it is dangerous to go into the jungle, telling them of the god that lives there, called Baradagi-Sanjin. Dismissing it as native folklore, the three continue their way into the jungle. They don't find it for the entire day, so they camp out, where Ellie is nearly attacked by an unusually large python. The snake is driven off, and the next morning is found, half eaten. The group find the plant, unaware that this is what keeps Baradagi-Sanjin at bay. Taking back home only causes the monster, Varan, to awaken and follow the group back to Louisiana. For a majority of the film, he goes unnoticed by the three, but is quick to attack an army base, which is investigated by General Christopher Warden (Bruce Campbell). Things in the swamp haven't been much better, as James has been infected by the fungus and Ellie and Eugene are quick to fall prey to it as well. Marie and Michael meet in the hospital when visiting those infected. Elsewhere, Varan lays waste to a mining field. Warden is quick to dispatch his army to find and kill whatever caused half of the workers to be crushed, not by rocks, but rather stepped on. In the swamp, four teens, two boys one of the boys' girlfriend and the other's female cousin are attacked and killed by the now mutated Honey Island Swamp Monster, which is quickly growing. Varan then makes his larger appearance in the film, attacking the main city, with Warden's men quick to fire away, having little affect on the beast. Ray, meeting with Michael, Marie and Brianna (who was the first to know of James' infection) tells them of the monster's legend, and helps them prepare in case it attacks them. This all cumulates in a final battle between Varan and the now mutated and giant Honey Island Swamp monster. In the aftermath, James, Ellie and Eugene are given funerals having been killed during the fight, Ben funding a clean up project with the mayor, and Michael and Marie decide to part ways, but will keep in touch. General Warden pushes for a monster look out, to make sure this doesn't happen again. Varan, wounded but alive, returns to his home. Ray continues his job as a fisher man, and having witnessing the death of the Honey Island Swamp monster, invites more people to join him. The end.
Sorry for the lengthy description, but I think that was the best way to explain it. Yes, I did borrow some plot points from the 1958 original film. Here's to hoping that this does happen and puts Varan in a bigger spot light. If you add this to your favorites, please comment on it first. Thanks.
